Capturing a trial

Step-by-step guide to recording a movement trial with two cameras.

Last updated April 17, 2026

A trial is a single recording of a movement by a subject. QOOM uses stereo capture from two smartphones to enable 3D reconstruction.

Equipment needed

  • Two smartphones with the QOOM mobile app installed.
  • A printed ChArUco or checkerboard calibration target.
  • A tripod or stable mount for each phone (recommended).
  • Adequate lighting — direct sunlight and backlit subjects produce poor results.

Before recording

  1. Place the two phones at roughly 45° angles to the movement space, approximately 2–3 meters apart.
  2. Both phones should see the subject's full body throughout the movement.
  3. Avoid reflective surfaces, moving backgrounds, and cluttered scenes.

Calibration

Calibration establishes the geometric relationship between the two cameras. Without it, 3D reconstruction is not possible.

  1. Place the calibration target in the capture space.
  2. Both phones must see the target clearly.
  3. Tap Calibrate on the app and wait for confirmation.

See Calibration explained for detail on what calibration measures and when to redo it.

Recording

  1. Choose the movement module (Gait, Squat, ACL Hop, CMJ).
  2. Coach the subject through the movement as you normally would.
  3. Press record on both phones (synchronization is automatic).
  4. After the movement is complete, stop both recordings.

After recording

The video is uploaded and processed automatically. Processing typically takes 1–5 minutes depending on clip length. You will see the session move from processing to completed in the Sessions list.

Quality checklist

For reliable results:

  • ✓ Both cameras in the same frame for the entire movement
  • ✓ Subject's full body visible throughout
  • ✓ Stable, well-lit environment
  • ✓ Calibration completed within the current session
  • ✓ Subject wearing clothing that allows joint identification

See Capture quality issues for solutions to common problems.
